Losing a Loved One
-
We understand that losing a loved one can be a very difficult time and have included the following checklist to ensure that you don’t miss any important steps.
- Meet with lawyer to commence Probate Proceeding. Provide lawyer with a copy of the Will and certified copies of the Death Certificate.
- Transfer all Real Estate Properties.
- Apply for Widowed Person Exemption, when applicable.
- Apply for Homestead and Disability Exemption.
- Notify insurance companies and file claims when applicable.
- Life Insurance (any document which names the deceased as a beneficiary).
- Medical, Health, Disability, Travel and Accident.
- Home Owners.
- Car Insurance.
- Apply for appropriate benefits when applicable.
- Social Security Survivor Benefits.
- Veteran’s Burial and Survivor Benefits.
- Pension Benefits.
- Workmen’s Compensation Benefits.
- Notify accountant/tax preparer (unless estate lawyer is preparing final tax returns). Provide photocopy of death certificate, previously filed tax return forms, and current earnings and dividend statements.
- Notify Stockbroker.
- Change ownership of joint or solely owned stocks.
- Cancel any open orders arranged by the deceased.
- IRA and Retirement Accounts.
- Notify Bank.
- Change all jointly held accounts and correct tax identification numbers (usually Social Security number).
- Cancel direct deposit retirement benefit payments.
- Re-establish title of Safe Deposit Box.
- Re-establish all outstanding mortgages, personal notes, etc.
- Apply for any credit life insurance which may exist on loans, credit cards and mortgages.
- Notify Department of Motor Vehicles to transfer titles of all registered vehicles, mobile homes, and boats registered in the deceased’s name.
- Notify all credit card companies.
- Apply for credit card life insurance coverage when applicable.
- Cancel all individually held cards of the deceased.
- Change all jointly held accounts.
